It was time to try and finish up everything for chapter 13 with creating the questions. I am not sure why chapter 13 again gave me some troubles in creating questions as well but it was a bit difficult for this chapter I did look at matching the headings and objective with the questions which took some time as I need to go back to all chapters and match the objectives. It turned out to be a bit of trying process. Creating the questions for the chapters were not as challenging sometimes as matching the objectives. I am hoping doing it with this chapter will prepare me for doing the rest of the chapters. Not sure if it was the best to save this for the end or not. Anyway on to the questions specific to chapter 13. I was able to go through and create many questions regarding the career stages in the sports industry. The same goes for internal and external candidates as well. I found it difficult to create questions based on certificate programs. Either way I was able to get all the questions complete with the subject or heading and what I think it the appropriate objective.
Another Chapter was receive in the form of chapter 13. Once again it was back to reading to go through the chapter and read it to find out and pull out all the key information to create the power points and questions. Chapter 13 was an interesting chapter as well. The stages of a career were broken down and I never really looked at a career in such a way. It was very interesting to see. I think in the late stage of peoples career it is very much the complacent stage. Many people stop really trying late in their professional career. Many are just working to work and not to grow anything other than there bank roll. Looking at coaches, mentors and sponsors was a good topic as well. Creating the power point was a bit of challenge for this chapter for me for some reason. Much of the information I pulled out came from the four career stages especially the exploration and entry phase.
Continuing on the Chapter 3 power point I was still involved with many different topics like equal employment and harassment. The chapter actually worked out really well on slides because there seemed to be a good balance of information on the slides because there were many different topics to address on each. Keeping it simple on the slides are always key. It is all about hitting the key points. I then moved on to creating some questions. Today I was setting out to try and complete as much as possible with this new chapter. Creating the questions were challenging at times because it seemed like the questions were only hitting certain areas. It was easy to try and confuse some of the types of discrimination since there were so many it is easy to see how you could confuse them I tried to take full advantage of that part. The true / false questions always were a bit easier to come up with still a challenge which held through again here. I was also able to create many questions based on employees as well since that is what human resources are all about.
I just recently received information for chapter 3 therefore it was time to get to reading the chapter to break down all the information. Chapter 3 dealt with Human Resources which is always interesting to talk about. It was interesting to break the chapter down as there was a lot of good information in the chapter. Discrimination was the main area of focus that was talked about. All types of discrimination. I never knew there were so many! It was great to learn when all of these Acts came into play as well. After I had all of the information pulled out. I then began working on the formatting of the power point and putting some information on some slides to get a head start on things. This chapter is shaping up to have a lot of slides based on all the different items.
Today I went through all the power points I had completed and checked for mistakes. It was a nit of a process to read through all of the power points in search of mistakes or changes that needed to be made. The amount of content on each slide was contemplated a lot. It is important not to have to much information on one slide just as much as you do not want to have too little information. Striking the correct balance for each topic was a trying task at times. Some chapters were easy to break parts up onto the slides and then others it was hard to decide just how much to put on each slide based on the topic. Formatting the bullet points or numbers were interesting as well. For some slides I started with a bullet and some I did not if it was the only topic on the slide with other information below it. However, I am not sure that created the best consistency overall. After looking at the chapters it was good again to review them. Chapters 2, 4, 5, 8, 9 and 10 were pretty much done. One more look will probably be needed.
Chapter 11 again dealt with the tricky subject of terminating employees. Something no manager or supervisor really wants to do. Questions about discipline were interesting as well. Counterproductive behavior and employee behavior styles were an interesting topic to make questions on since then can be slightly confusing in to some. While creating the true / false questions it was fun switching terms in attempt to trick some people into believing them. Or you are trying to see if they will hold on to there same thoughts.
After the change I took sometime to format the rest of the chapters a bit to assist in setting up the remaining chapters.
Chapter 9 was another interesting chapter to go through and create questions for. The functions, skills and roles of managers and supervisors are very interesting to discuss. The leadership styles made me think more about what type of leader I was. The traits discussed made me think more about myself as a coach. Creating the questions were interesting to look at each of the leadership theories. Staff Meetings were broken down nicely into things to do before, during and after the meetings. Chapter 10 was a good chapter to create questions for as well because it death with motivation. These days it is hard to find many intrinsically motivated workers. If you do find them you want to keep them. The questions some people need to be sure to read so they can find out what being intrinsically motivated really means. The multiple choice questions could be based a lot around the different theories that were presented in the chapter. The performance management cycle created and opportunity to make some good questions as well. In speaking with Dr. Tiell I learned that there were come changes made to the formatting of the questions. I no longer needed fill in the blank questions or short answer questions. Therefore, I had to go back and edit my questions for chapters 2, 4, 5 and 8. Only True /False and multiple choice questions were necessary. I had to go back and change some questions in order to hit some topics. I had to go back and create a few new questions as well to make everything workout. It was good to go back and look at some questions again anyway.
Today I was dealing with Chapters 5 and 8. After looking back at all of my notes from reading the reading and creating the power points it was time to create some questions. Creating quality questions is a difficult at times as you try to hit as many different topics as possible. It is important to create questions that are thought provoking and a challenge.
Chapter 5 was very fun to look at from a question perspective. Recruiting and talent acquisition is pretty much the number part of being a coach. Many people do not look at it this way but when student-athletes are being recruiting they are essentially being interviewed by the coach. Interviews can be formal and informal. Chapter 8 dealt a lot with training and at times creating the questions become confusing even to my self at times because I did not want to mix up the wrong trainings. It did however provide good options for the multiple choice questions. I never did realize that there were so many different types of trainings out there as well, it really is endless. It was now time to get back to work on my work. It took some time to get back to where I left off. I had to re-read through many times to get back on track. Once I was able to get into the flow of things things become much easier. I was working on the Chapter 5 questions therefore I had to look back at other power points to get the format set up. I also had to re-read much off the chapter and look over my notes to get everything ready to create the power point. While creating the questions from the information in the chapter regarding turnover rates and preparing for vacancies reminded me about coaching. As a coach you need to be very prepared for people to go another direction. Departures can be a surprise or expected much like in regular jobs. As a coach you also create a profile for the “job” you have available for student-athletes. There were many parallels to be made that I will take from this chapter.
